Softball sweeps a pair of one-run thrillers

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks softball team staved off a comeback to defeat Penn State Abington, 6-5, in the opener on Wednesday afternoon at Hintz Athletic Field. Berks then rallied from an early two-run deficit for a 3-2 comeback win to finish off the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) doubleheader sweep.

Berks ran its program-best winning streak to 18 straight and improved its record to 24-3 overall and 14-0 in the NEAC, while Abington falls to 15-3 for the season and 7-5 in the conference.

GAME ONE
Berks jumped out to an early lead with four runs in bottom of the second inning and a few innings later both teams exchanged a few runs to give Berks a 6-2. Abington got one run back in the top of the sixth and put two runs across in the seventh with only one out in the inning. Abington had the tying run on second base and the go-ahead run on first base, but Jessica Rozick recorded her 11th strikeout of the game for out No. 2 and forced a pop up back to herself to seal the victory.

Rozick scattered eight hits and allowed five runs - four earned - in another complete game performance to improve to 11-1 on the season. The freshman right-hander struck out the side in the second and third innings en route to another double-digit strikeout game.

Ashley Malek smacked a solo home run, her fourth of the season, to provide Berks with what proved to be the game winner in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Every batter in the lineup had a hit with Chelsea Bright, Jenna Heffner, and Malek each recording two hits and driving in a run. Bright also stole two bases, while Heffner swiped one bag.

GAME TWO
Abington got on the board first with a pair of runs in the opening frame. Berks got a run back in the second inning when Megan Olsen slid in just ahead of the catcher's tag on a bunt by Kendel Reed and then evened it at 2-all in the bottom of the third when a single up the middle by Olsen scored Heffner. In the bottom of the fifth, Bright was able to work a walk to lead off the inning and stole second base to get into scoring position. Bright tug up and advance to third on a fly out to center field by Heffner and then came into score a batter later on a sacrifice fly by Malek to put Berks ahead, 3-2.

In the bottom of the seventh and clinging to a one-run lead, Becca Faust was able to a groundout to short and a fly to center field for two quick outs. But Abington was able to put runners on the corner with their No. 3 batter in the order Breanna Lineman coming to the plate. On the first pitch of the at-bat, Lineman ripped a sharp grounder to Missy Lamm, who scooped up the ball cleanly and threw to first in time to get the runner.

Berks finished the game with just five hits as Olsen led the way by going 3-for-3 with a double. Lamm and Heffner collected the other two hits in the game. Heather Rissell recorded two stolen bases, while Bright, Heffner, Lamm, and Reed each had one steal.

Faust moved to 7-0 on the season out of the pitcher's circle after scattering six hits and allowing just two runs. She had two strikeouts and did not issue any walks.

Berks will host Lancaster Bible College in a NEAC doubleheader on Saturday, April 23 at 1 p.m. Also on Saturday afternoon, the softball squad will be teaming up with baseball, men's tennis, and women's tennis for the annual Spring Pink Games to benefit the Breast Cancer Support Services of Berks County.
