Softball extends win streak to program-best 16th straight

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks softball team continued on its winning ways after picking up a pair of wins, 5-0 and 10-2, in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) South Division sweep over visiting Gallaudet University on Sunday afternoon at Hintz Athletic Field.

The Nittany Lions (22-3, 12-0 NEAC) extended its win streak to 16 in a row, which surpasses the 14 straight by the 2008 squad for the most consecutive victories in program history.

GAME 1
Jessica Rozick scattered three hits over seven scoreless innings to pick up the win in pitcher's circle. Rozick recorded 11 strikeouts, one away from her career-high, which marked the fifth game this season that she had double digit strikeouts. The Bison managed only four base runners for the game - one of which was caught stealing - and could not get anyone in scoring position. Rozick set Gallaudet down in order in the second, third, and fourth innings and at one point had retired 13 consecutive batters.

The offensive was held scoreless until they broke through for five runs in the bottom of the fourth. In that inning, the Nittany Lions had five straight singles to start the inning, starting with a single to right field by Megan Olsen. Missy Lamm followed with a bunt single and Heather Rissell got Berks on the board with an RBI single to left field. Kendel Reed loaded the bases with a bunt single, then Becca Faust drove in two runs with a line drive single to center. Mackenzie Huber scored Reed with a groundout and Faust scored on the play when the first baseman threw the ball away.

Jenna Heffner had the only extra base hit of the game with a triple down the right field line.

GAME 2
The Nittany Lions jumped out to an 4-0 lead by taking advantage of three errors in the bottom of hte second inning. They tacked on two more in the fourth and ended the game with four runs in bottom of the fifth inning to reach the mercy rule.

Heffner finished the game 3-for-3 with two triples and two runs batted in. Natalie Babik went 2-for-2 with a double, two RBI, and a run scored to extend her hitting streak to five straight. Babik started the season in an 0-for-14 slump, but during her hitting streak she has gone 8-for-12 and has raised her batting average to .308 for the season. Carolyn Degurski went 1-for-2 and drove a pair of runs to end the game in the bottom of the fifth. Rissell, Reed, and Becky Webster all recorded a hit and a run scored.

Olsen improved to 3-1 on the season with five innings of three hit ball. She allowed two runs - one earned - while striking out three batters.

The Nittany Lions will continue their home stand with a doubleheader against Penn State Abington on Wednesday, April 20 at 3 p.m.
