Softball picks up home sweep over Wilson College

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks softball team earned a sweep over Wilson College, 7-1 and 9-0, in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) South Division doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Hintz Athletic Field.

The Nittany Lions improve to 20-3 on the season and 10-0 in the NEAC, while Wilson falls to 10-12 overall and 3-3 in the conference.

GAME 1
After two scoreless innings, the Nittany Lions were finally able to get on the board with three runs in the bottom of the third inning. Chelsea Bright led off of with a walk and Jenna Heffner followed with a bunt single. Ashley Malek singled home Bright and advanced to second on the throw, while Heffner went from first to third on the play. Missy Lamm then ripped a shot up the middle that bounced off of second base and caromed into left field for a double that easily scored Heffner and Malek.

In the following inning, Berks extended its lead with three more runs to go ahead 6-0. Malek drove in Bright with a single to center field and Megan Olsen scored Heffner and Malek with single to center field.

The Phoenix got a run for themselves in the top of the sixth with a pair of doubles, but Berks countered with a run in their half of the inning. Bright again got the offense going, this time with a one-out single and then stole second a batter later. With two outs on the board, Olsen singled to center to plate Bright with the final run of the contest.

The offense finished the game with 11 hits as the first five batters (Bright, Heffner, Malek, Olsen, Lamm) in the Nittany Lions lineup finished the game with two hits apiece. Kendel Reed had the other hit for Berks with her single in the bottom of the third. Olsen had a team-high three RBI, while Malek and Lamm both drove in two runners. Bright scored three runs, followed by Heffner and Malek with two each. Berks finished the contest with six stolen bases.

Jessica Rozick continued her domination in the pitcher's circle after scattering seven hits and allowing one run in a complete-game effort. The freshman right-hander finished the game with nine strikeouts, raising her total to 85. Rozick improves to 9-1 with a 0.80 ERA in 70.0 innings pitched.

GAME 2
The offense got things going right away with a four spot in the bottom of the first inning. Bright singled to right field, followed by Heffner with a bunt single down the first base line. Malek then scored Bright with a single to left field and two batters later Lamm drove in Heffner and Malek with a double to the fence in left center. Heather Rissell followed with a single and Lamm scored when left fielder bobbled the ball.

Bright had a one-out double in the bottom of the second and came around to score on an RBI groundout to the pitcher by Malek. The Nittany Lions tacked on two more runs in the third inning. Carolyn Degurski doubled down the right field line to score Rissell and Natalie Babik singled up the middle to bring Degurski around to score. Berks finished off its scoring in the bottom of the fourth with an RBI single by Lamm that scored Malek and groundout to shortstop by Abby Staskiel that brought in Olsen from third.

Bright, Malek, Lamm, and Degurski each recorded two hits in the game, with Lamm collecting three RBI and Malek driving in two.

The Nittany Lions received another sensational pitching effort out of Becca Faust in the second game shutout. The freshman right-hander scattered three hits and struck out four batters in five shutout innings. She improves to 6-0 with a five complete games and three shutouts in 35.0 innings of work.

The Nittany Lions will host Gallaudet University in a NEAC doubleheader on Sunday, April 17 at 12 p.m.
