Softball stays hot with sweep of Abington

ABINGTON, PA - Jessica Rozick and Becca Faust each turned in gems out of pitcher's circle and the offense combined for 21 hits in two games as the Penn State Berks softball team swept Penn State Abington by scores of 6-1 and 10-0 in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) doubleheader on Monday afternoon at Huntingdon Field.

Berks ran its season-high win streak up to 10 games to improve to 16-3 overall and 6-0 in the NEAC South Division, while Abington falls 7-10 for the season and 3-3 in the conference.

GAME 1
Berks got on the board quickly when Jenna Heffner ripped a one-out triple in the top of the first inning and was plated on an infield single by Ashley Malek. They padded their lead in the top of third when Heffner reached on an error and came around to score on a single by Missy Lamm.

Abington cut the lead in half when Ashley Worek, who led Abington with a 3-for-3 effort at the plate, ripped on RBI double down the left field line in the bottom of the third inning.

Berks countered with a run in the top of the sixth to go ahead 3-1. Heather Rissell led off with a double and moved up to third on a single by Kendel Reed. Mackenzie Huber knocked in the run with a groundout to second.

Clinging to a two-run lead, Abington looked poised for a comeback after Worek led off the bottom of the sixth with a triple to right center. Rozick got the first out of the inning with a strikeout of the No. 3 batter in the order. Rozick then got a fly out to Rissell in right field, who then gunned down the runner at the plate to end the threat.

Megan Olsen and Lamm each had RBI doubles in the top of the seventh and Reed added an RBI single to extend the Berks lead to 6-1 heading into Abington's final at-bat.

Rozick worked a 1-2-3 bottom of the seventh to secure her conference leading seventh win of the season. Rozick allowed just five hits and struck out nine batters in her eighth complete game of the season.

Heffner finished the game 2-for-4 with three runs scored and stolen bases, while Reed was 3-for-4 with an RBI and a stolen base. Olsen, Lamm, and Rissell all finished 2-for-4 with an extra base hit.

GAME 2
Faust scattered six hits en route to her fourth complete game and second shutout of the season. The freshman right-hander kept the Abington offense off balance and finished the game with two strike outs. Faust is now 5-0 on the season with a 0.48 ERA in 29.0 innings of work.

The offense took care of business with a run in the top of the first inning, then put up a 5-spot in the second to pull ahead 6-0. Berks finished off its scoring with a pair of runs in both the third and fifth innings.

Heffner stayed hot on offense, finishing 2-for-3 with an RBI, three runs scored and a stolen base. Malek went 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI, while Lamm had two hits and drove in two runs. Olsen drove in three runs and Reed scored twice.
