Softball picks up two more wins at Fastpitch Dreams Classic

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Penn State Berks softball team won in dramatic fashion with a walk off, 3-2, win over Medaille College and followed that up with a one-hit, 8-0, shutout over Regis (Mass.) College on the second day of the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic in Myrtle Beach.

In the opener, the Nittany Lions (4-0) broke a 2-all tie in the bottom of the seventh inning when the right fielder could not handle a fly ball off the bat of Ashley Malek to score Chelsea Bright, who led off the inning with a single.

Berks found themselves in an early hole after Medaille's top two batters in the lineup scored in the top of the first. But Jessica Rozick, who was recently named the NEAC Pitcher of the Week, settled in and did not surrender another run. The freshman right-hander struck out eight batters in six innings, but did not factor into the pitching decision. Abby Staskiel tossed a scoreless inning in the top of the seventh and would improve to 2-0 this season after Berks recorded a run in the final frame.

Jenna Heffner, Malek, and Missy Lamm each collected two his for Berks. Lamm recorded an RBI single in the bottom of the third inning that tied up the game.

Becca Faust was nearly perfect in her pitching debut against Regis that was halted after five innings due to the eight-run rule. The freshman right-hander faced the minimum amount of batters and allowed only one hit, but the runner was quickly erased from the bases with a 5-4-3 double play. Faust struck out one batter, while forcing seven ground outs and forcing two pop ups to the infield.

In addition to the pitching gem, the offense reeled off eight runs on eight hits. Becky Webster was 2-for-2 at the plate with a double, stolen base, two runs scored, and four RBIs. Kendel Reed was 2-for-3 with a double, three runs batted in and a runs scored, while Lamm went 2-for-3 with a double and two runs scored. Heather Rissell had a hit, two walks, and scored to runs.

The Nittany Lions will wrap up their spring break trip on Tuesday, March 8 with games against Gettysburg College (9:30 am), Eastern Mennonite University (11:30 am), and Hilbert College (3:30 pm).
