Softball goes 2-1 on final day of spring trip

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Penn State Berks softball team opened up the day with a setback to Gettysburg College, but bounced back with wins over Eastern Mennonite University and Hilbert College to finish off the trip with a 5-1 record.

Kendel Reed managed the only hit for the Nittany Lions in a game where nothing went right in a loss Gettysburg. The team bounced back with a thrilling 2-1 win against EMU. Ashley Malek put Berks ahead 1-0 with an a single to score Jenna Heffner in the top of the first inning. The Royals (2-3) then tied the game up with a run in their half of the second. In the sixth inning, Heather Rissell led off with a double and moved up to third on a wild pitch. Megan Olsen grounded out to the first baseman to score Rissell with what turned out to be the winning run.

Jessica Rozick continued her strong start out of the pitching circle. The right-hander scattered eight hits and allowed just an unearned run against EMU to improve to 2-0 on the season. In the bottom of the seventh, the Royals began the inning with a single down the line, a hit batter and infield single to load the bases with no outs and the top of the order coming to the plate. Rozick then forced back-to-back infield flies before forcing a ground out to third to seal the victory.

The defense came up huge in the late innings to end the Royals threat. Natalie Babik tracked down a deep fly in the bottom of the fifth and got the ball to Missy Lamm with the relay throw. The runner was tagging up from second base and being waved home, but tripped a few steps beyond the third base bag. This gave enough time for Lamm to throw into Mackenzie Huber at third, who then chased the runner down and threw to Malek to get the runner at the plate.

Huber was part of an inning ending double play again in the bottom of the sixth. The third baseman made a catch on a line drive and got the runner leaning off of first base.

Berks received a complete-game effort out of Becca Faust in the 6-2 win over Hilbert in the final game of the day. Faust, who carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning, allowed two runs - one earned - while scattering three hits and striking out four batters.

Reed went 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored, while Huber was 2-for-3 with one run scored. Heffner added a hit and two RBI.

The Nittany Lions will have some time off before returning to action with a non-conference doubleheader at nearby Albright College on Monday, March 21 at 3 p.m.
