Softball opens up season with a pair of wins

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Penn State Berks softball team opened up the 2016 season with a 4-2 win over Mount Aloysius College and an 11-7 comeback victory over Penn College on Sunday afternoon at the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic.

Jessica Rozick made a fantastic collegiate debut with a complete-game, 12 strikeout performance in the opener. The freshman right-hander allowed two runs - both unearned - while giving up just three hits and one walk. Rozick's 12 strikeouts are tied for the third most in a game in program history.

Jenna Heffner kicked off her senior season with the first home run of her career. The speedy lefty drove a line drive that one-hopped of the fence in right field and Heffner raced around the bases and easily crossed home plate before the relay throw. She finished the game 2-for-4 with a double, two runs scored, and three RBIs. After collecting two hits on the day, Heffner now sits at 100 career hits, which ranks seventh in the record books.

The Nittany Lions trailed 2-1, but were able to knot the game at 2-all in the bottom of the fourth. Heffner led off the inning with a walk, advanced to second on a passed ball and reached third after a wild pitch. Ashley Malek then singled through the left side to plate Heffner. Rozick tossed a 1-2-3 frame and the Berks offense went to work in their half of the inning. Missy Lamm led off the inning with a single and Chelsea Bright drew a walk with two outs. Both runners came around to score on Heffner's double to right center to give Berks its winning margin.

Penn College was able to jump out to a 6-0 lead after two innings in the second game. The Nittany Lions got back into the game with five runs in the bottom of the second after taking advantage of four walks and a hit batter. Bright drove in two runs in the third to put Berks ahead 7-6, but the Wildcats evened the game at 7-7 in the top of the fifth.

Becca Faust led off the bottom of the fifth with a single and moved up on a walk to Morgan Omlor. Faust was forced in on a bases loaded walk and Omlor scored on a sacrifice fly by Megan Olsen. Heather Rissell then capped off the scoring with a double to tack on two more runs.

Abby Staskiel picked up the win in the pitcher's circle with her complete-game effort. Bright, Heffner, Lamm, and Faust each scored two runs against Penn College.

The Nittany Lions will continue its spring break trip with a game against Medaille College (11:30 a.m.) and Regis College (3:30 p.m.) on Monday, March 7.
