Strong pitching leads softball to sweep of Alvernia

READING, PA - Backed by strong pitching, solid defense, and timely hitting, the Penn State Berks softball team was able to pick up a sweep over Alvernia University by scores of 1-0 and 7-3 in non-conference action on Tuesday afternoon.

The Nittany Lions picked up their fourth straight victory and improved to 10-3 on the season in their final tune-up before getting into conference play this weekend.

In the opener, the Nittany Lions scored a run in the top of the first inning, which was all the scoring needed after the performance they got out of pitcher Jessica Rozick. Rozick scattered five hits and issued two walks, but the freshman right-hander recorded 11 strikeouts to work her way out of trouble. The Crusaders (9-9) had a leadoff double to start the game, but Rozick forced a pop out to catcher, a fly to left field, and a strikeout to end the threat. In the bottom of the third, Alvernia loaded the bases with just one out. Rozick kept her composure and got a pop up in foul territory to third base and a strikeout swinging to get out of the jam.

Rozick improves to 4-1 on the season with a 1.05 ERA and 38 strikeouts in 40.0 innings pitched.

The lone run of the game started with Jenna Heffner drawing a one-out walk in the top of the first and advancing to second on a wild pitch. Ashley Malek recorded a double to left field to score Heffner with what proved to be the winning run.

Becca Faust turned in a fine performance out of the pitcher's circle in game number two and the offense exploded for all seven of its runs in the second inning. Faust scattered 11 hits and surrendered three runs (one earned), while striking out three batters. The Crusaders used a pair of singles and walk to bring the tying run to the plate with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning, but Faust forced a roller to shortstop that Missy Lamm fielded and tossed to first to secure the victory.

Malek led off the scoring frenzy in the second inning with a single through the left side and moved up to second on a sacrifice bunt by Lamm. Megan Olsen, who finished the game 3-for-4, followed with an RBI double down the left field line. Becky Webster plated Olsen and Kendel Reed with a single to right center that put Berks ahead 3-0 at the time. Later in the inning, Heffner singled in a run and Heather Rissell then drove in three runs with a bases clearing triple to centerfield.

The Nittany Lions will travel to Lancaster Bible College for their NEAC opener on Saturday, April 2 at 1 p.m.
