Softball picks up sweep over Swarthmore

SWARTHMORE, PA - The Penn State Berks softball team got back on a track with wins of 4-2 and 10-0 in a non-conference doubleheader with Swarthmore College on Saturday afternoon at Clothier Field.

In the opener, the Nittany Lions (8-3) jumped out to a 3-0 lead just two innings into the opening game, but Swarthmore plated a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth pull within one run. Berks tacked on an insurance run in the top of the seventh and Jessica Rozick took set the batters down in order to secure the win.

Jenna Heffner got the scoring started with a home run in the first inning. It is her second homer of the season, first that went over the fence. Kendel Reed led off the second inning with a single and came around to score on a double by Mackenzie Huber, who advanced to third on the relay throw to home. Chelsea Bright reached first base after being hit by a pitch to put runners on the corners. Bright stole second base and the on the throw down Huber was able to steal home to give Berks its 3-0 edge. Ashley Malek had an RBI single to score Bright with the fourth run of the game.

Rozick finished the contest with two runs on six hits, with three strikeouts. The freshman right-hander, who tossed her fourth complete game of the season, improved to 3-1 on the season with a 1.27 ERA.

Megan Olsen took care of business at the plate and from the pitcher's circle in the second game. She went 3-for-3 at the plate with three RBI, two runs scored and a double. The junior right-hander scattered three hits in six innings of shutout ball to pick up her first win of the season. Olsen matched a career-high with six strikeouts.

Heffner drove in two runs, while Reed went had one hit and scored a pair of runs. Heather Rissell had an RBI triple and scored a run, while Becca Faust and Becky Webster each had RBI singles. Missy Lamm, Carolyn Degurski, and Abby Staskiel all scored a run in the second game.

The Nittany Lions will travel to Alvernia University for a non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday, March 29 beginning at 3 p.m.
