Baseball splits home doubleheader with Ursinus

READING, PA - Sean Pavlik worked out of several jams and Pearce Harhigh roped a walk-off single to give the Penn State Berks baseball team a thrilling 3-2 win over Ursinus College in the first game of a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Hintz Athletic Field. The Bears were able to earn a split after taking the game two by a score of 13-1.

Cory Fox smacked a leadoff double in the bottom of the seventh inning of the opening game with the score tied at 2-all. Harhigh strolled to the plate with the intention of dropping a sacrifice bunt to move the runner up. After noticing the shift by the defense on the first pitch to Harhigh, head coach Justin Konnick had Harhigh show bunt and pull back to slap the game winning single through the wide open middle infield. The center fielder made a strong strike to home, but Fox was able to slide in ahead of the throw.

Berks tied the game up in the bottom of the sixth inning after Dylan Gallagher was plunked by a pitch with one out. Will Budock entered the game as a pinch runner and came around to score when Toby Welk ripped a double of the fence in left center. The Nittany Lions scored their first run of the game with back-to-back bunt singles by Nick Zipay and Luke Erb. Tom Grablewski then scored Zipay with a hit to right field.

Ursinus scored a run in the top of the first inning and added an unearned run the second off of Pavlik. But the sophomore right-hander settled in with a quick 1-2-3 inning through the heart of the order in the top of the third, followed by three up and three down in the fourth. The Bears put runners on the corners with one out in the fifth inning, but Pavlik got a pair of strikeouts to escape the jam. In the sixth, Ursinus had a runner reach third base with only one out, but Pavlik got a strikeout and an inning ending ground out to third. The top of the seventh inning also had Ursinus getting a base runner into scoring position with just one out on the board. But Pavlik shut the door with a groundout and a strikeout looking.

Pavlik improved to 3-1 on the season after scattering five hits and striking out a season-high eight batters.

Ursinus controlled the second game from the beginning and starting pitcher Seth Regensburg threw a complete-game three hitter. Welk finished the game 2-for-3 with a double, while Budock went 1-for-3. Austin Madeja scored the lone run for Berks.

The Nittany Lions will travel to Neumann College for a non-conference contest on Tuesday, March 29 at 3:30 p.m.
