Men’s basketball falls in NEAC Quarterfinal round

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Penn State Berks men's basketball team saw its 2015-16 season come to a close after suffering an 85-69 setback to Gallaudet University in the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) Quarterfinal Round on Tuesday evening.

The Nittany Lions (8-17) trailed by only five points at the break, but a 15-0 run to open up the second half gave GU a comfortable 20 point lead. Berks started making its shots midway through the half, but the Bison (18-7) continued its hot shooting as well. The Nittany Lions were able to chip away at the deficit and pull within 13 points, but that is as close as they could get the rest of the way.

Christian Burggraf was 11-of-23 from the field to finish with a contest-high 28 points to go along with four steals and two rebounds. Baba Waples followed with 17 points, while Dameon Nixon added 14 points, seven assists, and five rebounds. Monte Stokes and Nelson Hine finished tied for the team-high six boards apiece.

All five starters scored in double figures for the Bison, led by Trey Gordon with 18 points, followed by Andy Cruz and Raymond Nelson with 15. Cruz pulled down a contest-high 13 rebounds, while also notching three assists. Gallaudet will advance to the NEAC Semifinal round, where they will face Morrisville State College on Saturday afternoon.

Nixon finished off his four-year career with the Nittany Lions with the fourth most points in program history with 1,162. He is the all-time leader in assists with 459, while ranking second in steals (171. Burggraf, a three-year member of the program, has the third most career points (1,218) and is the career record holder in scoring average (16.7) and 3-point field goal percentage (36.9%). He ranks among the top five all-time in field goals made (448), 3-pointers made (170), free throws made (152), and free throw percentage (74.9%). Also finishing out his career is Michael Aldridge, who set the single-season rebound record with 258, and his 417 career boards are the fifth most. J.C. Keaton finishes off his four-year career with 112 points, 67 rebounds, and 23 assists, while Trevor Ford recorded 107 points, 107 boards, and 40 assists in his two years at Berks.

Waples compiled 479 points which is the second most in a single season, trailing the 492 points scored by Darren Major in the 2013-14 season. Waples scoring average of 19.2 points per game is tied for the second highest in a season. Burggraf finished with 434 points (4th most in program history) for a scoring average of 18.9, while Nixon had a career best 361 points and averaged 15.0 points per game.

The Nittany Lions finish off the 2015-16 season with an 8-17 overall record. They went 8-10 in the NEAC to finish third in the South Division and return to the postseason tournament after missing out last season. This year's team set the school record for points (2052), scoring average (82.1), field goals made (773), and free throw percentage (68.3) in a season.
