Strong 4th quarter leads women's basketball to win over Wilson

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks women's basketball team erased a 7-point deficit midway through the fourth quarter behind timely baskets and solid defense en route to a thrilling 80-75 victory over Wilson College in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) South Division contest on Sunday afternoon at Beaver Community Center.

The Nittany Lions (1-4, 1-2 NEAC) had four starters reach double figures in scoring, led by Deanna Daddona with 25 points and Sam Brensinger with 16. Sam Huggins notched her second double-double of the season with 13 points and 10 rebounds, while Mackenzie Huber tallied her first career double-double with 11 points and 10 boards. Brensinger finished just shy of joining those two in the double-double club, as the freshman guard handed out a career-high eight assists. Brensinger and Daddona both finished tied with a game-high four steals a piece.

Berks jumped out to a 9-0 lead to start the game, but would lead by just three points at the end of the first quarter and led 38-36 at halftime. The Phoenix topped Berks by six points in the third to lead 58-54 entering the final period. The Nittany Lions outscored Wilson, 26-17, through the final frame to pick up their first win of the season.

The Phoenix (2-4, 0-3 NEAC) took its largest lead of 69-62 with 5:12 remaining in regulation. Huggins made a steal at midcourt and drove down for a layup with just under five minutes, followed by Elise Paskowski hitting a pair of free throws after another Wilson turnover to make it a three point deficit with 4:09 to play. Brensinger made a steal and assisted on Daddona's game tying 3-pointer (71-71) with 2:51 to play.

Lindsey Purvis made a layup and finished off the old-fashioned three-point play with a free throw to give Wilson a two point advantage with 49 seconds to go. Huggins pulled down an offensive rebound to keep the ball in Berks' possession and Brensinger drilled a 3-pointer from the top of the key to put the Nittany Lions ahead 76-75 with just 34 seconds left on the clock. Daddona and Huggins combined to go 4-for-6 at the foul line over the final 17 seconds to secure the victory.

In the fourth quarter alone, the Nittany Lion defense took four charges and forced Wilson into 11 turnovers for the entire period. For the game, the Phoenix had 27 turnovers, compared to 22 by Berks.

The Nittany Lions had their best showing of the season at the foul line, converting on 15-of-19 (78.9), while the nine 3-pointers made matched a season-high. Daddona, Brensinger, and Huber all connected on three baskets from long range.

Paskowski finished the game with seven points, eight rebounds, and two assists, while Bre Schmidt recorded three points, two boards, and two assists. Britt Weiss, who provided valuable minutes down low for Berks, had two points and five boards.

Jordyn Day led the Phoenix with 25 points and four assists, followed by Purvis with 23 points and 11 boards.
