Moyer nets game winner in double OT; Nittany Lions win NEAC Championship

READING, PA - Brennan Moyer chipped a shot over the keeper's head and just under the crossbar with 32 seconds left in double overtime to give Penn State Berks the winning score over Lancaster Bible College in the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) Championship match on Sunday afternoon.

The Nittany Lions earned their fourth straight NEAC Title and Moyer was named the Tournament MVP with her late game heroics in the 1-0 victory. Berks, who earns the automatic bid for the NCAA Tournament, will now make their fourth consecutive trip to the regional tournament.

The Nittany Lions (17-3-1) and Chargers (15-6) played with a lot of heart and left everything they had on the field in one of the tightest conference championships in recent history.

With the clock ticking down in the second overtime, it appeared that the contest was going to head to penalty kicks. But after a failed attempt to clear the ball kept the possession deep in Charger territory. The ball was bouncing just outside of the box, which Moyer booted toward the net, which looped over the keeper's outstretched arms and deflected off the underside of the crossbar and into the net. The Berks fans shouted in excitement and the Nittany Lion players all stormed the field to celebrate with Moyer.

Prior to the start of the second overtime, the coaching staff decided to move Moyer off the back line and into the midfield to try to spark the offense. The move paid off for the Nittany Lions with Moyer's third game winner of the season.

Berks held a 13-4 advantage in shots and 4-1 in shots on goal. Paige Elmy made the save on the Chargers lone shot on goal in the first half, while Kaitlyn Scheuing finished with three stops. LBC threatened in the second half when a breakdown in defense led to a breakaway, but Megan Jardine was able to recover and made a clean tackle and knock the ball out of harms way. The Chargers had another opportunity in the first overtime when Raegan Horst's shot from the left corner of the box went toward the top right corner, but sailed just wide.

Lizzie Mummau and Caitlin Golden battled hard up top for the Nittany Lions, but were unable to get a clean look on goal throughout the contest. The strong midfield play from Kaylie Smucker, Julia Green, Alexa Lopez, and Charlotte Pizzuto kept the ball in Berks' possession for the majority of the match. Moyer, Shelby Baker, Jardine, and Karina Raykova turned in another solid performance on defense to help Elmy record the 14th shutout of the season, which matches the 2014 squad with the most shutouts in the a season. Nicole Brigante, Mackenzie Fredricks, and Keri Klimko provided depth by coming off the bench and giving valuable minutes. Fredricks helped bolster the back line in the overtime periods when she was moved to the defense and Moyer up to the midfield.
