Women's soccer falls on the road to Scranton

SCRANTON, PA – The Penn State Berks women's soccer team suffered a 3-0 setback to the University of Scranton in a non-conference contest at Fitzpatrick Field on Wednesday evening.

The Nittany Lions fall to 11-3-1 and see their eight-game win streak come to an end, while Scranton has now won 11 straight to improve to 13-1-1 on the season.

The Berks offense put pressure on the Royals right out of the gate with three shots and a corner kick in the first nine minutes. Lizzie Mummau ripped a line drive on target at the 8:17 mark of the first period, but goalkeeper Krissy Welsh made a phenomenal save to deny the goal.

Both teams exchanged shots over the next 20 minutes before the Royals broke through with a score in the 32nd minute. Dana Sarcinello nearly evened the score in the 37th minute, but Welsh got her hand on the shot and the ball deflected off the cross bar. Shelby Baker and Sarcinello each had shots sail just wide of target in the closing minutes of the half.

The Royals tallied another score in the 55th minute to build a comfortable lead and tacked on a score in the 88th minute to put the game away.

Paige Elmy turned in a solid performance in net with nine saves, which is her second most of the season. Elmy's counterpart finished the contest with seven saves to record the shutout.

The Nittany Lions return to action with a NEAC contest at the College of Saint Elizabeth on Saturday, October 22 at 12 p.m.
