Women's volleyball splits a pair of NEAC contests on Saturday

LANCASTER, PA - The Penn State Berks women's volleyball team opened the day up with a 3-2 setback to Penn State Abington, but rebounded with a 3-0 triumph over Bryn Athyn College in a pair of North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) contests on Saturday afternoon at the Horst Athletic on the campus of Lancaster Bible College.

The Nittany Lions are now 17-8 overall and sit at 7-3 in the NEAC.

In the opener, Abington claimed the first game by a 25-21 score followed by a 25-19 score in Berks' favor in the second game. Abington then won the third game 25-20, but Berks responded with a 25-12 victory to force the decisive fifth set. Abington sealed the victory with by a thrilling 16-14 margin to hand Berks its first loss in a five-set match this season.

All sorts of personal records were shattered in the contest. Megan DeAbreu established a new best in kills with a team-high 18, followed by Janae Barlow with a personal-high 17. Morgan Schwartz reached a new high in assists with 49, while Madison Wojciechowski had a career-high 33 digs. Alexis Horst (17 digs), Laken Bankert (14), Schwartz (14), and Cristine Humer (12) also reached double figures in digs.

Berks picked up a much needed sweep over Bryn Athyn after winning by scores of 25-19, 25-16, 25-9.

DeAbreu continued her hot run on offense with a team-high 10 kills, followed by Megan Lackman with seven and Horst with six. Bankert recorded seven of the Nittany Lions nine service aces, while also chipping in five digs and two kills. Schwartz handed out 30 assists and notched five digs and two block assists.

The Nittany Lions will host the University of Scranton in a non-conference contest on Tuesday, October 18 at 7 p.m.
