Men's basketball opens up New Year with win over Wildcats

WILLIAMSPORT, PA - The Penn State Berks men's basketball team started 2016 off strong with a 96-72 victory on the road over Penn College in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) contest on Tuesday evening at Bardo Gymnasium.

The Nittany Lions handed the Wildcats their first loss in conference play to pull even for second in the South Division with a 2-1 NEAC record.

After winning the opening tip off, Dameon Nixon knocked down a 3-pointer to give the Nittany Lions the lead which they would hold the for the entire game. They led by as many 15 points in the first period, before taking an eight point lead into the intermission. Berks opened the second half on a 13-4 run to build a comfortable 17-point cushion with 14:26 left in the game.

Baba Waples went 7-for-8 from the free throw line en route to a contest-high 23 points. As a team, the Nittany Lions tied for the second most free throws made in a single game with 25. Waples also added three steals, two assists, and a blocked shot.

Michael Aldridge recorded his first double-double of the season and fourth of his career after matching a personal-best 18 rebounds and adding 12 points. The senior center recorded nine rebounds on offense and nine rebounds on defense to raise his team leading average to 8.7 boards per game. Aldridge finished the contest 4-of-6 shooting from the floor and went 4-for-5 at the charity stripe.

Christian Burggraf tallied 18 points and grabbed five rebounds, while Nixon added 12 points, eight boards, four assists, and two steals. The duo inched closer on their bid for 1,000 career points, as Burggraf now sits at 929 and Nixon at 911.

Nelson Hine rounded out the Nittany Lions scoring in double figures with a 13 point effort to go along with his six rebounds, three assists, and three steals. Joel Ellison chipped in seven points and seven rebounds, while Dave Polisano added six points.

Thomas Ross and Deaundra McCants tied for the team lead with 15 points for the Wildcats, while Marquis Delgado had 12 points and seven assists.

The Nittany Lions will host Bryn Athyn College in a NEAC contest on Saturday, January 9 at 1 p.m.
