Nittany Lions sweep Gallaudet at home

READING, PA (April 19, 2015) - The Penn State Berks softball team needed a late rally to take the opener, 7-6, over Gallaudet University on Sunday afternoon at Hintz Athletic Field. The Nittany Lions then won 8-0 in the second game to earn the sweep in the NEAC South Division doubleheader.

After struggling to get runners in all game, the Nittany Lions exploded for seven runs in the fifth and sixth innings to take a 7-5 lead into the final inning. Things got a little dicey for Berks after the leadoff runner for the Bison reached on an error to start the seventh. The following batter had an RBI double that made the score 7-6 with no outs and a runner in scoring position. Abby Staskiel, who came on in relief, then settled down by getting a strikeout. She then got a fly out to center field and Jenna Heffner was able to double off the runner on second to end the game.

Staskiel threw 3.0 innings of relief, scattering four hits and allowing one unearned run to improve to 2-3 on the season.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, Missy Lamm reached on an error and advanced to third on a double down the right field line by Heffner. Casey Hafer then plated both runners with a single and advanced to second on an error. The final tally of the inning came on a triple to right center by Megan Olsen.

Mackenzie Huber singled to lead off the sixth and Kaylie Vrabel reached on an error to put runners on first and second. Lamm drove in both runners with a double to right center to tie the game up at 5-all. Hafer put Berks ahead with a sacrifice fly to center field and Ashley Malek added what proved to be the game winner with an RBI single down the left field line.

Lamm, Malek, Huber, and Rhianna Roulston each recorded two hits.

In the second game, Hafer tossed a complete-game shutout, surrendering six hits and striking out four. The senior right-hander ran into trouble in the second inning when the Bison had runners on second and third with just one out, but Hafer got out of it with a pair of strike outs. Gallaudet put on the pressure again in the fourth with runners on second and third one out, but Hafer escaped damage with a strike out and groundout.

Roulston went 3-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored to pace the offense. Olsen was 2-for-3 with a triple, two RBI, and two runs scored, while Heffner was 2-for-3 with two triples, two RBI, and two runs scored.

The Nittany Lions will travel to the College of Saint Elizabeth for a NEAC South Division doubleheader on Wednesday, April 22 at 3 p.m.
