Baseball splits season opener

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (March 8, 2015) - The Penn State Berks baseball team kicked off its 2015 campaign with a 10-5 win over the University of Scranton, before falling 6-1, to Catholic University of America on Sunday at the Ripken Experience Complex.

The win in first game was just the second time since becoming a member of Division III that the Nittany Lions opened the season with a win. The Nittany Lions trailed 4-1 after the first three innings and were down 5-3 heading into the top of the seventh. That is when Berks got its act together and put up four runs to take the lead and they added three more insurance runs in the top of the ninth.

Senior Connor Corson connected for a two run home run in the top of the fourth inning. Kyle Hartman and Tom Grablewski each went 3-for-5 and scored a run, with Hartman also adding two runs batted in. Luke Erb collected two hits and two RBI, while Nick Zipay and Dylan Gallagher each had a hit and scored two runs.

Scranton loaded the bases with no one out in the bottom of the seventh inning. Clinging to a 7-5 lead, Berks called on Hartman to work out of the damage. The lefty, who is the reigning NEAC Tournament MVP, came through with a pair of strike outs and a ground out to second to end the threat. Hartman tossed 2.0 innings without allowing a hit, while striking out four batters. Zach Reis earned the opening start, going 5 2/3 innings with two strike outs. Keith Salmon earned the win after tossing 1/3 of an inning.

The Nittany Lions will continue their spring break trip with games against Albertus Magnus College and 20th-ranked Bridgewater (Va.) College tomorrow evening.
