Nittany Lions come out strong in win over Washington

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (March 11, 2015) - The Penn State Berks baseball team exploded for seven runs in the opening frame en route to an impressive 11-2 win over Washington (Md.) College on Wednesday afternoon at Pelicans Stadium.

The top four batters in the lineup combined to go 10-for-16 with eight runs and six runs batted in. The team, which sent 11 batters to the plate in the first inning, pounded out 14 hits and drew six walks for the game.

Tom Grablewski and Dylan Gallagher were each 3-for-5 with two runs scored and Gallagher added two RBI. Nick Zipay was 2-for-2 with three RBI, two runs scored, and three walks. Luke Erb and Keeanu Erb each recorded two  hits, while Zach Reis had a double and three RBI. Senior Connor Corson had a hit and drove in a run.

On top of a strong offensive output, the Nittany Lions received a strong pitching effort from Kyle Hartman. The senior lefty, who is the reigning NEAC Pitcher of the Week, tossed a complete game with three strike outs and two runs allowed. Hartman set the batters down in order in four innings and he did not allow a runner beyond second base until the fifth inning.

The win is a nice bounce back for Berks after falling to Lock Haven University, 12-8, and Albertus Magnus College, 11-9, on Tuesday afternoon. The Nittany Lions led 6-5 after the fifth, before falling to Lock Haven, which is an NCAA Division II member and plays in the powerful Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference.

The Nittany Lions will complete their spring break trip on March 12 with games against Hood College and the University of Valley Forge.
