Golden, Sarcinello lead Nittany Lions to NEAC Title Game

READING, PA - Dana Sarcinello and Caitlin Golden each tallied a goal and an assist to help lead the Penn State Berks women's soccer team to a 2-0 victory over Lancaster Bible College in the semifinal round of the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) Tournament on Saturday afternoon.

The Nittany Lions (15-2-2) got on the board in the 13:50 mark of the opening half after Golden found an open Sarcinello, who then sent a line drive past the keeper for her 13th goal of the season. Berks had a few more scoring chances throughout the period, but were left with only a 1-0 lead going into the halftime intermission.

The Chargers (10-10-1) defense kept Berks in check early in the second half until Sarcinello played a cross in the box that Golden sent into the back of the net in the 77th minute.

The Nittany Lions defensive unit of Brennan Moyer, Shelby Baker, Caitlin Deibler, and Paige Clawser turned in a solid performance to limit the Chargers offensive attacks.

LBC was held shotless in the first half, but were able to get off five (four on goal) in the second period. Paige Elmy finished the game with four saves to pick up the win and the shutout. The Chargers keeper had several diving stops and finished the game with seven saves.

Fittingly, Sarcinello and Golden received their NEAC Player of the Year and NEAC Rookie of the Year awards following the playoff victory. The duo as well as the rest of the members of the conference on hand received there All-NEAC Team certificates.

The victory today also gave head coach Adrian Munteanu his 100th career win. At the helm of the women's program for eight years now, Munteanu has compiled a career record of 100-50-7.

Penn State Abington defeated SUNY Polytechnic, 6-0, in the other semifinal game to advance to Sunday's Championship game at 1 p.m. This is the third straight year that Berks and Abington will meet in the title game, with Berks winning 3-1 last season and 4-0 in 2013. The winner of Sunday's match will receive an automatic bid into the NCAA Regional Tournament.
