William Smith tops Nittany Lions in NCAA opening round

GENEVA, N.Y. - The Penn State Berks women's soccer team had its 2015 season draw to a close with a 3-0 loss to the No. 3 team in the country William Smith College in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday afternoon at Cozzens Field.

The Nittany Lions finish the 2015 season with an overall record of 16-3-2 after winning the NEAC Championship for the third straight season and make their third straight trip to the NCAA Tournament.

Berks improved its defense and created some scoring opportunities in the second half, but ultimately were unable to get the board. Dana Sarcinello and Lizzie Mummau took some dribbles deep into the Herons (17-1-1) territory several times, before Sarcinello finally put a line drive on target in the 68th minute that was saved by the keeper.

The Herons got on the board after Krista Longo knocked in a loose ball in the box at the 2:24 mark of the opening half for her first of two goals of the first period. The final tallly of the contest came in the 64th minute off the foot of Lauren Randaccio.

The defensive unit of Caitlin Deibler, Brennan Moyer, Shelby Baker, and Paige Clawser did a challenging William Smith's shots. Despite allowing three goals, Paige Elmy came up with a career-high 11 saves.

The 2015 squad leads the nation in goals scored with 121, which is the second most in program history. They set the single season school record in points (326) and assists (84). The loss of four-year senior standouts Deibler and Ellie McKinstry will be extremely difficult to replace, but with the return of three-time NEAC Player of the Year (Sarcinello), NEAC Rookie of the Year (Caitlin Golden), and a core group players returning makes the future look bright.
