Late goal propels Scranton to win over Berks

READING, PA (October 21, 2015) - The Penn State Berks women's soccer team suffered a heartbreaking 1-0 setback to the University of Scranton in a non-conference contest on Wednesday afternoon.

The winning tally came of the foot of defender Katie Cullen at the 85:09 mark of the contest. The Royals (11-3-1) sent a corner kick into the box that was eventually knocked out beyond the 18. Cullen collected the loose ball and sent a chip shot from 25-yards out into the far back corner of the net.

In the opening half, play took place primarily at the midfield with both teams playing evenly match. Scranton came out strong in the second half, earning three quick corners in a span of two minutes and creating some scoring chances. Then the Nittany Lions took a turn with a shot by Dana Sarcinello sailing just wide of net at the 54:29 mark. Sarcinello then had her shot at 55:06 knocked over the crossbar to force a corner. On the ensuing corner, Lizzie Mummau head went barely off target in the open near post. One minute later, Caitlin Golden had a line drive stopped by the keeper.

Berks held a 10-9 advantage on shots (5-4 on goal), while the Royals had a 7-6 edge on corner kicks.

Paige Elmy made three saves in net for Berks, while her counterpart Krissy Welsh made five stops.

The Berks men's and women's team hosted their Pink Game fundraiser and were able to raise $184.00 in donations and through a kicking contest. The fundraiser also involves sales from Fall Pink Game T-shirts and with donations at the women's volleyball match on Friday afternoon. All proceedings will go to the Breast Cancer Support Services of Berks County.

The Nittany Lions return to action Saturday, October 24 at 1 p.m. with a NEAC contest against the College of Saint Elizabeth.
