Softball falls in wild thriller to Manhattanville

SALISBURY, MD (May 10, 2014) - The Penn State Berks softball team battled back and forth all game with Manhattanville College, as the teams exchange leads eight times in the NCAA Salisbury, Maryland Regional game on Saturday afternoon. Unfortunately, for Berks, Manhattanville emerged as a 15-10 winner in nine innings to knock the Nittany Lions out of the regional tournament.

Colleen Hoge went 2-for-5 with two runs batted in, two runs scored and a home run to lead the Nittany Lions offensive attack. Casey Hafer, Julia Moscato, and Megan Olsen each had two hits an RBI, while Jenna Heffner had a hit and two runs batted in.

The Nittany Lions jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the bottom of the third, but the Valiants (28-9) responded with four runs in the top of the fourth to go ahead 5-4. Hoge hit a one-out solo home run to left field to tie it up at 5-all. The teams exchanged blows over the next few innings and again were all knotted up, this time at 10-10 heading into the seventh.

Olsen tossed 1-2-3 innings in the seventh and eighth, while Berks looked ready to wrap up the win in the bottom of the eighth. Chelsea Bright lead off with a double to left center and the Nittany Lions were able to load the bases with just one out. The Valiants worked out of it by getting the lead runner at home on a grounder to short and a fly out right field to end the threat.

Manhattanville broke it open with five runs, off of six hits and two Berks errors to gain a 15-10 lead in the ninth. The Nittany Lions put two bases runners on in the ninth, but the Valiants got out of it to win the long lasting battle.

The Nittany Lions finished the season with a 29-10 overall record and went 18-2 in conference en route to their second straight division title. Berks then won the NEAC Tournament and earned its second straight berth to the NCAA Regional Tournament. The Nittany Lions had the NEAC South Pitcher of the Year (Hafer), Rookie of the Year (Heffner), Coach of the Year (Donna Ference), and had seven members earn all-conference honors.
