Nittany Lions swept on the road by Alvernia

READING, PA (March 20, 2014) – The Penn State Berks softball team was unable to get its offense going and as a result dropped a pair of non-conference contests to Alvernia University on Thursday afternoon at Angelica Park. (Photo Gallery)

The Nittany Lions (6-2) battled hard in a 2-0 setback in the opener, while the Crusaders generated early runs en route to an 8-0 victory in the nightcap.

Casey Hafer allowed two runs – one earned – and struck out two batters in six innings of work. The junior right-hander worked out of a bases loaded jam in the second inning to keep the game close. Chelsea Bright made a diving stop at third base and threw the ball home to record a force out. Hafer then got a fly out to Rhianna Roulston in center field to end the threat.

Bright went 3-for-4 out of the leadoff spot. Jenna Heffner, Hafer, Megan Olsen, and Missy Lamm each went 1-for-3.

In the second game, five different players recorded a hit.

The Nittany Lions will return to action on Saturday, March 22 with an away doubleheader at Haverford College beginning at 1 p.m.
