Women's volleyball falls in NEAC title game

WASHINGTON, D.C. (November 9, 2014) - The Penn State Berks women's volleyball team saw its 2014 campaign come to a close with a 3-0 setback to Gallaudet University in the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) Championship contest on Sunday afternoon.

It was the second time in four years that the Nittany Lions (20-10) finished runner-up to the Bison. GU eased to a 25-14 win in the opening game, but the Nittany Lions battled over the next two, falling by scored of 25-22 and 25-21.

Sophia Zhang led the Nittany Lions with 12 kills and 14 digs. The sophomore outside hitter finished the season with a single-season school record of 438 kills and her .316 hitting percentage was the third best in a season. Zhang is the all-time leader for career kills with 855 and her .295 hitting percentage is the second best ever.

Maria Pavone finished off her stellar career with six kills and two block assists. The four-year standout has played the most matched (119) and sets (385) in program history and ranks in the top four all-time in kills (594), solo blocks (64), block assists (83), total blocks (147), and points (718.5).

Heleanna Davison tallied five kills, one ace, and one solo block. She finished the season with the third most solo blocks (41) and single-season leader in block assists (45) in program history.

Jordan Heath dished out 22 assists. The sophomore setter also enjoyed a record breaking season this year. Over the weekend, Heath became the single-season record holder with 1058 assists and jumped over the 2,000 career assist plateau with 2013 after two seasons.

Megan DeAbreu finished the contest with 10 digs, giving her 503 on the season.

The young Nittany Lions squad had a lot to be proud of during the 2014 season. They reached 20 wins, which is the third most in a season in program history. As mentioned above, many players became all-time record holders for in a season and for their career. As a team, they set program-highs in hitting percentage (.214) and block assists (160). The team was second in kills (1249), assists (1163), and total blocks (161.0).
