Softball falls in regional opener to Lebanon Valley

ITHACA, N.Y. (May 9, 2013) - The Penn State Berks softball team suffered a 7-0 setback to Lebanon Valley College in the opening round of the NCAA Division III Championship Regional on Thursday afternoon at Kostrinsky Field on the campus of Ithaca College.

Casey Hafer and Lebanon Valley left-hander Sam Derr were in a pitcher's duel throughout the opening innings. The Dutchmen (33-5-1) were able to take advantage of a few Nittany Lion miscues to put up three runs in the bottom of the fourth and fifth. LVC made Berks pay for an error in the sixth by tacking on one more insurance run.

Hafer allowed seven runs - three earned - with three strikeouts, while Derr tossed a four-hit, shutout with six strikeouts.

The Nittany Lions (36-4) threatened with runners in scoring position in each of the first two innings, but were unable to come away with any runs.

Colleen Hoge led off the game with a single to left field, advanced to second on a sacrifice by Marissa Ruggiero and reached third on a groundout by Jess Epler. But Derr got an inning ending strikeout to strand Hoge at third. Lexi Lobb hit a one-out double to left field in the second inning, but was left there after a strikeout and fly out ended the inning.

Singles by Abby Staskiel in the fifth and Hoge in the sixth were the only base runners for Berks over the final three innings.

The Nittany Lions will face the loser of Utica College and Washington College in an elimination game tomorrow at 12 p.m.
