Nittany Lions magical season draws to a close at regionals

ITHACA, N.Y. (May 10, 2013) - The Penn State Berks softball teams 2013 record setting season came to an end when the Nittany Lions lost 8-1 to Utica College at the Ithaca Regional of the NCAA Division III Championship on Friday afternoon at Kostrinsky Field.

The Pioneers (34-13) opened up the game with a run in the top of the first with an RBI single by Mallory Ingalls, but Berks countered with a run in the bottom of the inning. Jess Epler doubled down the left field line with two outs and was brought home with a single by Missy Lamm.

Utica had a runner on third base with two outs in the top of the second, but Casey Hafer forced a groundout to third base to end the threat. The Pioneers broke through with a run in the top of the fourth and a few misplayed flies by Berks led to a six-spot in the fifth inning.

The Nittany Lions were held hitless against Briona Enny over the second through six innings. Trailing 8-1, Epler and Lamm led off the bottom of the seventh inning with back-to-back singles. Enny picked up the first out with a fly to right field and Ingalls picked her second runner off base to bring Berks to its final out. Lexi Lobb kept the Nittany Lions season alive with a single through the left side to put runners on the corners. Enny finished off the complete-game five hitter by inducing a grounder to second base.

Ingalls went 3-for-4 with two RBI and a runs scored, while Alyssa Russell went 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI.

Epler, who entered the week as the leader in batting average, finished 2-for-3 and her current average of .615 should hold up as the nation's best.

The Nittany Lions broke practically every single record in program history during the 2013 season. The squad earned the first ever trip appearance to the NCAA Championship in program history after winning their first NEAC Championship title. The Berks offense set the school record for batting average (.341), slugging percentage (.455), runs scored (316), doubles (64), home runs (13), RBI (256), and walks. The pitching staff established school records in wins (36), ERA (1.65), batting average against (.198), complete games (34), shutouts (18), and strikeouts (251).
