Nittany Lions remain unbeaten in conference play

READING, PA (April 7, 2013) - The Penn State Berks softball team picked up wins by scores of 7-0 and 3-1 over Wilson College in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) South Division doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at Hintz Athletic Field.

The Nittany Lions improved their overall record to 18-2 and 6-0 in the NEAC South, while the Phoenix fell to 4-10 overall and 4-2 in the conference. Prior to the sweep, Berks had dropped 11 of the last 12 meetings and each of the last seven games.

Jess Epler combined to go 6-for-6 with four RBI, five runs scored, four doubles, and a triple. She also tossed back-to-back complete games from the pitcher's circle to improve her season record to 14-1. Epler finished the day with 13 strikeouts, raising her season total to 108. She limited the Phoenix to just three hits in the first game and four hits and one unearned run in the second game.

Casey Hafer went 3-for-4 with two RBI and run scored in the opener, while Marissa Ruggiero and Colleen Hoge each collected two hits and an RBI.

In the second game, Katelyn Wingerd reached on an error and came around to score off of a single by Faith Ricker to give Wilson a 1-0 lead.

The Nittany Lions countered with a run in the bottom of the inning with back-to-back two out doubles by Epler and Ruggiero.

The score remained even until Berks broke through for two runs in the bottom of the fifth. Kaylie Vrabel reached base on an error to start the inning. Epler hit an RBI double and advanced to third base on the relay throw to home. The catcher then overthrew third base and went out of play, allowing Epler to score.

Wilson loaded the bases in the bottom of the sixth, but all three runners were stranded when Maggie Sipps grounded out to second base.

The Nittany Lions will host Penn State Abington in the conference doubleheader on Saturday, April 13.
