Softball sweeps Abington; sets program record for wins

READING, PA (April 13, 2013) - The Penn State Berks softball team set the single-season program record for wins after sweeping Penn State Abington, 4-0 and 3-2, in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) South Division doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Hintz Athletic Field.

The Nittany Lions improved their record to 20-2 overall and 8-0 in the NEAC South Division. That win total surpasses the previous high of 18 record by the 2008 and 2011 squads.

In the opener, the Nittany Lions finally broke through for four runs over their final three at-bats to earn the win. In the bottom of the fourth, Colleen Hoge and Marissa Gonzales each drove in a run to put Berks up 2-0. Marissa Ruggiero added a sacrifice fly in the fifth and Missy Lamm had an RBI double in the sixth to give Berks their run production.

Jess Epler earned the win from the pitcher's circle after surrendering just four hits and striking out eight batters. She recorded her 10th shutout of the season.

In the second game, both teams were engulfed in a pitcher's duel as a combined seven hits were only recorded. Casey Hafer pitched five innings of two-hit ball with four strikeouts. She received a no-decision after leaving the game tied at 2-all. Epler threw the final two innings without surrendering a hit to pick up her 16th win of the season.

Berks got on board in the second inning after Hoge reached on a fielder's choice and eventually came around to score on a wild pitch. They tacked on one more run in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI single by Hoge that scored Ruggiero. The final run came in the sixth when Epler led off with a single and came around to score on a sacrifice fly by Lexi Lobb, which proved to be the winning run.

The Nittany Lions will travel to Gallaudet University for a NEAC South doubleheader on Sunday, April 14 at 1 p.m.
