Softball clinches first ever NEAC regular-season title

CHAMBERSBURG, PA (April 27, 2013) - The Penn State Berks softball team swept Wilson College by scores of 8-5 and 12-0 on Saturday afternoon to clinch the first ever North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) South Division regular-season title in program history.

The Nittany Lions improved their overall record to 31-3 and 17-1 in the NEAC South Division. After wrapping up the South Division crown, the Nittany Lions will host the NEAC Tournament on Friday, May 3 through Sunday, May 5.

In the opener, Abby Staskiel went 3-for-4 with one run and one RBI. In addition, Staskiel pitched the final two outs of the game to record her second win of the season. Casey Hafer was 2-for-4 with two RBI, while Jess Epler had one hit and drove in two runs.

In the second game, Hafer tossed a 5.0 inning no-hitter to improve to 13-2 on the season. The only blemish on Hafer's pitching line was a pair of walks. Hafer set down the final nine batters in order to record the first no-no of her career.

The bats came to alive for Berks in the second game as the top five batters in the order combined for 11 hits. Epler was 3-for-3 with four runs scored, three RBI and a triple. Missy Lamm and Hafer each recorded two hits and drove in three runs, while MARISSA RUGGIERO went 2-for-3 with two RBI and three runs scored.

The Nittany Lions will host the College of Saint Elizabeth on Sunday, April 28 at 1 p.m. Prior to the start of the doubleheader, the Nittany Lions will honor seniors DEVON DENKER and MARISSA RUGGIERO.
