Softball closes out regular-season with sweep of St. Elizabeth

READING, PA (April 28, 2013) - The Penn State Berks softball team finished off its dominating regular-season with a sweep over the College of Saint Elizabeth, 8-0 and 9-0, on Sunday afternoon at Hintz Athletic Field.

The Nittany (33-3, 19-1 NEAC) honored Devon Denker and Marissa Ruggiero with Senior Day celebrations prior to the start of game one. The duo were handed balloons, flowers, and small gift bag as they met their teammates standing around the pitcher's circle. Denker and Ruggiero are both four-year members of the softball program and rank among the top in most statistical categories.

Denker went 3-for-3 in the opener, matching her career-high for hits in a game. She followed that up with a 2-for-3 effort in the second game. The five hits on the day raised her batting average .233 to .288 on the season.

Casey Hafer picked up the win in both games after combining 10.0 scoreless innings and allowing just six total hits. The right-hander tossed a no-hitter in the second game yesterday and has not allowed a run in her last 16.0 innings of work. Over that time, Hafer has lowered her earned run average to 2.01 and raising her strike out total to 99.

Abby Staskiel pitched the last inning of game two, striking out two batters and forcing a pop out to second base.

Hafer worked out of a number of jams in the second game to keep the shutout alive. The Eagles (13-17, 6-14 NEAC) loaded the bases with just one out, but Hafer got a force out at home and then a ground out to third base to end the threat. In the second inning, Saint Elizabeth had runners on first and second with one out, but Colleen Hoge caught a line drive and tug out the baserunner for an unassisted double play. The Eagles had runners on the corners in the third inning, but Hafer got a looping line out to Hoge, who then threw to third to get the runner for not tagging up.

Staskiel led the offensive attack in the second game after going 3-for-3 with three RBI, while Ruggiero and Hafer each added one hit and two runs batted in. Jess Epler went 1-for-3 in the first game and drove in a pair of runs that forced the game to end due to the eight-run rule.

In addition to the pre-game celebration, the seniors and all of the fans in attendance were given the pleasure of hearing Missy Lamm sing the National Anthem.

The Nittany Lions will host the NEAC Softball Championship for the first time in program-history after winning the regular-season title. The six-team, double elimination tournament will begin on Friday, May 3 and run until Sunday, May 5. Please check back later for more details when the official tournament field is announced by the conference office.
