Hafer and Staskiel nearly flawless in win over Rosemont

ROSEMONT, PA (April 23, 2013) - Casey Hafer and Abby Staskiel combined to toss 10 innings of three hit ball without surrendering a run in a sweep over Rosemont College in a non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon.

The Nittany Lions took the opener by a score of 15-0 and followed it up with a 12-0 win to improve to 29-3 overall. The stellar day at the plate raised Hoge's batting average from .308 to .354 on the season.

Leadoff batter Colleen Hoge finished the day 7-for-8 with six runs scored, and three RBI to lead the Nittany Lions offensive attack.

In the opener, Hoge and the following three batters in the order combined to go 12-for-16 with 11 runs scored and 10 runs batted in. Hoge was 4-for-4 with a double and four runs scored, while Jess Epler was 3-for-4 with three runs scored, two home runs, and a career-high seven RBI. Marissa Ruggiero recorded two hits and scored three times and Missy Lamm had three hits and one RBI.

Hafer allowed only two hits in the opener, both of which came in the first inning. The second batter of the game doubled and the Ravens received a two-out single to put runners on the corners, but Hafer ended the threat with her first of five strike outs. The right-hander did not allow a runner to reach base over the final four innings.

In the second game, Ruggiero remained on fire by going 4-for-4 with two runs and two RBI. Hoge also stayed hot with a 3-for-4 performance. Leftfielder Katy Lutz went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI triple.

Staskiel, who made her pitching debut on Sunday, received her first start out of the pitcher's circle. The freshman right-hander made the most out of the opportunity, allowing only one hit and striking out two batters. The only damage done by the Ravens was a two-out triple in the bottom of the first inning, but Staskiel forced a pop up to short to end the inning.

Staskiel helper her own cause by going 2-for-4 at the plate with two runs scored and two RBI.

The Nittany Lions will travel to Wilson College for an NEAC South Division doubleheader on Saturday, April 27 at 1 p.m. Berks just needs to win one of its final four conference contests in order to clinch the first regular-season division championship in program history.
