Softball inches closer to conference title with sweep of Abington

ABINGTON, PA (April 21, 2013) - The Penn State Berks softball team swept Penn State Abington, 4-2 and 11-1, in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) South Division doubleheader on Sunday afternoon.

The Nittany Lions (27-3) improved to 15-1 in the South Division and have a 4.0 game lead over second place Wilson College, with four conference games remaining on the schedule. Berks and Wilson will square off in a doubleheader next Saturday. Abington has a 1.0 game lead over Penn State Harrisburg for the third and final playoff spot.

Casey Hafer earned both wins out of the pitcher's circle and Marissa Ruggiero combined to go 6-for-8 with four runs scored.

Ruggiero, Jess Epler, and Abby Staskiel each recorded three hits in the opener. Berks got the offense going right away with three runs in the top of the first. Colleen Hoge and Ruggiero opened up the game with singles and Epler followed with an RBI double. Ruggiero then scored on a wild pitch and Epler scored on a sacrifice fly by Hafer.

Abington responded in the bottom of the first inning with a two-run home run off the bat of Trish Watson. Hafer settled in from there and only allowed three hits the rest of the way, while recording eight strikeouts.

In the bottom of the sixth, the tying run was on third base with no outs when Sheila O'Hagan led off with a triple. But Hafer recorded a strike out, a ground out to third and then the runner was picked off of third base to end the threat.

Ruggiero single-handedly tacked on an insurance run in the top of the seventh. The senior center fielder led off with a double and reached third on an error by the left fielder. Ruggiero then scored on a passed ball to give Berks a two run cushion.

In the nightcap, Berks recorded eight runs after sending 13 batters to the plate in the second inning. Staskiel picked up two of her career-high four runs batted in during the scoring frenzy. Missy Lamm also recorded two RBI in the inning. Staskiel had a two-run double in the third inning to give Berks an 11-0 lead at the time.

Hafer earned her 10th win of the season with four innings of four-hit ball. She allowed just one run and struck out five batters. Staskiel finished off her career-day by making her first pitching appearance of the season. In her debut, Staskiel issued one walk and no hits in one inning of scoreless relief.

The Nittany Lions will travel to Rosemont College on Tuesday, April 23 for a non-conference doubleheader. The first pitch of game one is scheduled for 3 p.m.
