Softball picks up a pair of wins over Gallaudet

READING, PA (April 20, 2013) - The Penn State Berks softball team won by scores of 5-3 and 9-3 to sweep Gallaudet University in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) South Division doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Hintz Athletic Field.

The Nittany Lions, who are ranked No. 4 in the Division III East Region, improved to 25-3 overall and 13-1 in the NEAC South Division. With the Berks sweep and a pair of losses by Wilson College, the Nittany Lions extended their lead for first place in the division to three games.

Casey Hafer earned the win in the pitcher's circle in both games to improve her season record to 8-2. The right-hander combined for 19 strikeouts, including a career-high 12 in the opener.

In the first game, Berks quickly jumped out to a 5-0 lead with three runs in the first and two in the second. The Bison (11-23, 1-13 NEAC South) fought back with three runs in the fourth and one more in the fifth to pull within two of Berks. The Nittany Lions were only able muster three hits over their final four at-bats, but Hafer recorded the final five outs via strikeout to secure the win.

Colleen Hoge led off the bottom of the first with a double and came around to score on a single by Kaylie Vrabel. Missy Lamm then followed with a home run to put Berks up 3-0 through their first three batters.

Lamm, who tallied four RBI in the game, drove in Vrabel and Devon Denker with a single in the bottom of the second.

In the second game, Alicia Johnson hit a two-run homer in the first inning to give the Bison an early lead. But Hoge and Jess Epler responded with a strong offensive attack for the Nittany Lions. Hoge went 3-for-4 with three runs scored, while Epler was 4-for-4 with two doubles, a homer, and four runs batted in. Denker and Hafer each recorded two hits.

The Nittany Lions will travel to Penn State Abington for an NEAC South Division doubleheader on Sunday, April 21 at 1 p.m.
