Softball splits doubleheader at Penn State Harrisburg

MIDDLETOWN, PA (April 17, 2013) - The Penn State Berks softball team saw its 13-game win streak come to an end after dropping the second game by a score of 1-0 on the road to Penn State Harrisburg. Berks picked up a 4-1 victory in the opener of the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) South Division doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon.

The Nittany Lions perfect run through conference play now moves to 11-1, while the overall record shifts to 23-3. Berks still holds one game lead over Wilson College for first place in the NEAC South Division standings. Penn State Harrisburg now sits at 5-7 in the conference, two games behind Penn State Abington for the final playoff spot.

In the opener, Casey Hafer pitched 3.2 innings of relief to pick up her sixth win of the season in the pitcher's circle. Hafer surrendered three hits, allowing one run and striking out four batters. Jess Epler allowed only two hits in 3.1 scoreless innings to start the game.

At the plate, Missy Lamm and Marissa Ruggiero each recorded two hits and scored a run, while Marissa Gonzales had one hits and drove in two runs. Hafer recorded an RBI sacrifice fly in the top of the sixth inning to add an insurance run for the Nittany Lions.

Hafer pitched brilliantly in the second game with just two hits allowed. Unfortunately for Berks, Kara Boyd was on top of her game with a one-hit shutout. Hafer struck out five batters and issued one walk, while Boyd recorded eight K's and gave up three free passes. The two pitchers combined to put down the opposing batters in order seven times.

The lone run came in the fourth inning when Riley Loch drove in Boyd with a single through the left side.

Lamm broke Boyd's no-hit bid with a single through the left side in the top of the fifth inning.

Berks will host Gallaudet University in a NEAC South Division doubleheader on Saturday, April 20 at 1 p.m.
