Baseball splits final games of spring trip

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (March 7, 2013) - The Penn State Berks baseball team concluded its trip to Myrtle Beach with a 3-4 record after defeating Emerson College (11-6) and falling to Wilkes University (9-7) on the Thursday afternoon.

The Nittany Lions batted around in back-to-back innings, putting up a five spot in each of them, rally past Emerson in the opener. Seven players finished with two or more hits, led by Clinton Faust's 4-for-5 effort at the plate. The top five members of the lineup - consisting of Christian Marcin, Faust, Nick Vitelli, Ryan Tantala, and Tom Grablewski - each scored two runs. Tantala drove in a team high three RBI, while Grablewski, Josh Spayd, and Dillon Landrigan each drove in two runs. Brad Dierolf also recorded two hits and had one RBI.

Keeanu Erb pitched four innings of relief to earn his first win on the mound of his collegiate career. The freshman right-hander surrendered three hits and allowed two runs, while striking out four batters. Logan Kurtz shutdown the Lions with three scoreless innings to record the save.

In the nightcap, the Colonels (6-0) jumped out to an early 7-2 lead behind a five-run second innings. The Nittany Lions got a run back in the top of third on an RBI single by Grablewski and one in the fourth when a sacrifice fly by Vitelli scored Nick Zipay.

Wilkes got both those runs back in the sixth inning and looked to be easily heading for a win with a 9-3 lead going into the top of the ninth. Faust led off the inning with a single, moved to third on a single by Erik Lanzner and scored on a hit by Elias Manzueta. John Rivera followed with a single to load the bases and a line drive up the middle by Brian Scharnitz cut the deficit to 9-6 with just one out. Phil Anderson reached on a fielder's choice to score Dierolf to pull the Nittany Lions within two runs. Kyle Rissmiller walked to load the bases, but Wilkes went to its bullpen to record the final out on a grounder to third.

Mason Mecke pitched 5.1 innings in his first start on the pitcher's mound. He suffered some bad luck in the third inning as the Colonels had several flares land just out of the reach of the infielders. Mecke settled in with a 1-2-3 third inning and faced just three batters in the fourth after picking a runner off of first base. Steve Koenig pitched 2.2 innings of scoreless relief.

The Nittany Lions will return to action on Tuesday, March 12 at 4 p.m. when they host their home opener against Gwynedd Mercy College.
