Softball picks up two more shutouts

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (March 5, 2013) - The Penn State Berks softball team continued its program-best start to a season by picking up two more shutouts on Tuesday afternoon at the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic. Berks opened the day with an 11-0 win over Rivier College and followed that up with an 18-0 victory against Green Mountain College.

The Nittany Lions improved to 5-0 and have outscored their opposition by a 59-0 clip.

Jess Epler pitched a complete-game shutout, striking out seven Rivier batters. At the plate, Epler had a double, triple, and six runs batted in. Marissa Gonzales went 2-for-2 with a run scored, while Marissa Ruggiero went 2-for-4 with two RBI and a double.

Against Green Mountain, Epler and Casey Hafer combined for one hit shutout. Epler pitched the first two frames and Hafer recorded six strikeouts over  the final three innings.

Hafer was 3-for-3 at the plate with a triple, three RBI, and two runs scored. Colleen Hoge went 2-for-2 with a double, two RBI, and two runs scored, while Missy Lamm had two hits and three runs scored. Abby Staskiel recorded three RBI on a bases clearing double.

The Nittany Lions will finish off their spring break trip with a 9:30 a.m. game against Emory & Henry College tomorrow morning.
