Softball improves to 3-0 to start the season

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (March 4, 2013) - The Penn State Berks softball team swept a pair of games on Monday afternoon to get off to its best start in program history. They defeated Penn State Beaver 6-0 in the opener and won by the same score against Penn State Altoona.

Jess Epler, who tossed a no-hit 14 strikeout performance on Sunday, earned both victories on the day. She has not allowed a run in 19.0 innings of work, while surrendering just eight hits and striking out 30 batters.

In the win over Beaver, Colleen Hoge and Casey Hafer were each 2-for-4 with an RBI. MISSY LAMM drove in one run and scored twice in the winning effort. Against Altoona, freshman Lexi Lobb busted open a 1-0 contest with a grand slam in the top of the seventh inning. Epler was 2-for-3 with a home run and senior Marissa Ruggiero also picked up two hits.

The Nittany Lions will continue their spring break trip with a twinbill on Tuesday afternoon, beginning with Rivier College at 9:30 a.m. and Green Mountain College at 11:30 a.m.
