Softball cruises to sweep over Penn State Schuylkill

READING, PA (March 28, 2013) - The Penn State Berks softball team downed Penn State Schuylkill by scores of 8-0 and 20-0 in a non-conference doubleheader on Thursday afternoon at Hintz Athletic Field.

In the opener, the Nittany Lions (12-2) ended the contest with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning when a triple by Jess Epler scored two runs and put the mercy rule into effect. Epler went 4-for-4 with four RBI and a run scored in the opener. Missy Lamm was 2-for-4 with a run scored and Casey Hafer had a hit and scored a run.

Epler allowed just one hit and one walk in six shutout innings. She struck out 10 batters, marking the second time this season she reached double figures in that category.

In the second game, Lamm, Epler, Marissa Ruggiero, and Lexi Lobb each recorded three hits. Lobb had a game-high four runs batted in, followed by Ruggiero with three. Ruggiero scored four runs, while Lamm, Epler, and Hafer crossed home plate three times.

Hafer earned her third win of the season after tossing five scoreless innings from the pitcher's circle. She surrendered just two hits and issued only one walk, while striking out a career-high 10 batters.

The Nittany Lions will begin conference play when they host Penn State Harrisburg on Wednesday, April 3 at 3 p.m.
