Nittany Lions split doubleheader at Swarthmore

SWARTHMORE, PA (March 24, 2013) - The Penn State Berks softball team won the opener over Swarthmore College by a score of 3-0, but dropped the second game, 7-4, in a non-conference doubleheader on the road Sunday afternoon.

The Nittany Lions (10-2) did all of their scoring in the first inning of game one. Missy Lamm singled and Jess Epler followed with a double to put runners on second and third. Marissa Ruggiero then plated both runners with a single and advanced to second on the throw to home. Lexi Lobb capped off the scoring with an RBI double.

Those three runs were all that Epler needed as she kept the Garnet (9-3) offense silent. The freshman right-hander tossed a complete-game, one hitter with four strikeouts. The only hit Epler surrendered came in the bottom of the fifth, but was only able to reach second base. The closest Swarthmore came to scoring was in the first inning when Kate Smayda reached on an error, but was eventually left stranded on third base.

In the second game, Lamm went 2-for-4 with a home run, three RBI, and a run scored. Epler went 2-for-2 with a home run, giving her the single-season school record with five. Katy Lutz finished the game 1-for-3 with two runs scored.

The Nittany Lions will Penn State Schuylkill in a non-conference doubleheader on Thursday, March 28 at 3 p.m.
