Epler and Hafer pitch Nittany Lions to sweep of Immaculata

READING, PA (March 21, 2013) - Jess Epler and Casey Hafer each tossed complete-game gems to help the Penn State Berks softball team to a doubleheader defeat of Immaculata University on Thursday afternoon at Hintz Athletic Field. The Nittany Lions won the opener by a 4-3 margin and earned a 3-1 decision in the nightcap.

The Nittany Lions improved their overall record to 9-1 with the sweep. The victories also gave the Nittany Lions the edge in the all-time series with the Mighty Macs (6-7) by a 5-3 margin.

Epler pitched all seven innings to pick up her seventh win and eighth complete game of the season. She allowed three runs - one earned - while scattering eight hits. Epler recorded nine strikeouts to raise her season total to 62.

Epler hit a two-run homerun in the third inning of both contests, which also proved to be difference in both games. The two one shot in the first game capped a three-run inning to give them a 3-1 lead. The second game homer gave Epler four for the season, which ties Dayna Harrison for the single-season school record.

Hafer went 2-for-2 in the opener, while Kaylie Vrabel, Epler, and Marissa Gonzales each finished 2-for-3. Vrabel also scored a pair of runs.

In the second game, Hafer made the most out of her first start from the pitcher's circle this season. She gave up seven hits and one run, while striking out six in her complete game effort. Hafer sat down the first six batters in order before giving up a leadoff double in the top of the third. The runner advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt, but was stranded after Hafer forced a pair of groundouts.

In the Berks half of the third, Missy Lamm drew a walk and scored on Epler's blast to right center. The Mighty Macs cut that lead in half with a run in the top of the sixth, but Berks immediately countered with a run of their own. Hafer reached on an error and was pinch ran for by Devon Denker. Denker advanced to third on a single by Colleen Hoge and scored on a groundout by Gonzales.

The Nittany Lions will travel to Swarthmore College on Sunday, March 24 for a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
