Nittany Lions suffer first loss of the season after splitting with Alvernia

READING, PA (March 20, 2013) - The Penn State Berks softball team defeated crosstown rival Alvernia University for the first time April, 2009 after taking Wednesday afternoon's opener by a score of 6-1. Alvernia was able to pull out a 3-1 victory in the second game to salvage a split.

The Nittany Lions (7-1) continue their best start to a season despite the game two setback. For the season, Berk has outscored its opponents 72-7.

In the opener, the Nittany Lions broke open a 1-1 tie game with five runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Kaylie Vrabel led off the inning with a single up the middle and came around to score on a single by Marissa Ruggiero. That single also scored Jess Epler, who was awarded home plate after obstruction was called on the third baseman. Casey Hafer drove in Ruggiero with a single to the outfield. Marissa Gonzales capped off the scoring with an RBI single to score Hafer and Colleen Hoge on a throwing error.

Epler tossed a complete game to improve to 6-0 on the season. She scattered seven hits and surrendered just one run. Epler also picked up three strikeouts.

The second game was a pitcher's duel between Epler and Deanna Dungee. The Crusaders (11-3) were able to get a run off of Epler in the top of the first and fifth inning. The Nittany Lions narrowed there deficit with a run in the bottom of the sixth, but Alvernia countered with an insurance run in the top of the seventh.

In the bottom of the seventh, Alvernia picked up two quick outs and seemed to be on their way to a win. But Devon Denker reached on an infield single and Vrabel singled up the middle to make things interesting. Missy Lamm loaded up the bases with a single to right field. Dungee, who opened the inning with back-to-back strikeouts, took matters in her own hands and recorded a strikeout to pick up the complete-game victory.
