Men’s basketball falls in the NEAC Semifinal round

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. (February 23, 2013) – The Penn State Berks men's basketball team saw its amazing 2012-13 season draw to a close with an 82-61 setback to Wells College in the NEAC Semifinal round on Saturday afternoon. (Boxscore)

The Nittany Lions (13-12) finished with a winning record for just the second time since becoming an NCAA Division III institution. They were one win away from tying the franchise record (14) set by the 2005-06 team. And most importantly, this years' squad was the first team in program-history to win the NEAC South Division regular-season title.

Senior Dontez Reid finished off his magnificent career with 12 points, behind the help of 3-of-6 shooting from 3-point range. Tom Smith, who received his NEAC All-Conference First Team award prior to the game, also chipped in 12. Rookie of the Year recipient Dameon Nixon recorded his first double-double of his career with 10 points and 10 boards.

Senior Jeff Schmidt registered seven points, six assists, and three blocked shots in his final game with the blue-and-white. Fellow senior Connor Hough added six points, while freshman Darren Major netted nine points.

The Nittany Lions trailed 43-33 at halftime, but were able to quickly cut that deficit down to seven points on a jumper by Hough with 14:35 left in the game. The Express were able to take back the momentum with an old-fashioned three point play on the ensuing possession.

Wells received game-highs of 25 points and 11 rebounds from Jonathan Hurtado. EJ Taylor followed with 19 points, while Jonathan Bonds and Al Paul added 15 and 11 points, respectively. The Express were helped by their 54.4% shooting from the floor, compared to the 35.1% shot by Berks.

This is the second straight year that the Nittany Lions season came to an end on the campus on Morrisville State College. Wells will take on the No. 1 seeded Mustangs tomorrow at 2 p.m., with the winner earning a trip to the NCAA Tournament.
