Nittany Lions unbeaten streak snapped by Scranton

READING, PA (October 16, 2013) - The Penn State Berks women's soccer team suffered a 1-0 setback to the University of Scranton in a non-conference contest on Wednesday afternoon. (Boxscore)

Both teams entered the contest with impressive streaks, but it was the Royals (12-2) that were able to extend it. The Nittany Lions (12-3-1) had their 10 match unbeaten streak snapped, while Scranton picked up its 12th straight win.

The teams played an even battle that took place primarily in the midfield. The Royals, who are ranked 10th in the region, broke through with a goal in the 66th minute thanks to some help by the post. There was a loose ball inside the box that Kelsey Bacon flopped up into the air with a great amount of side spin that appeared to be heading over the net. But the ball slowly descended, smacked off of the far post and deflected into the net.

Savannah Cramer finished the contest with six saves, including an amazing diving save in the first half to keep the match scoreless. The defensive unit of Katie Warner, Melissa Bennett, Emily Rumpf, and Lizzie Mummau kept the Scranton attack silent for most of the day.

Mummau and Taylor Schwartz each recorded a shot on goal, but Krissy Welsh was able to make the save on both shots. Simone Stewart had a few shots that sailed just wide of the goal. Every shot and pass by the Nittany Lions was defended strongly by the Scranton back row, which has only surrendered nine goals the season.

The Nittany Lions will host Keuka College in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) contest on Saturday, October 19 at 3 p.m. The men's and women's teams will be sponsoring a Pink Game fundraiser which will benefit the Breast Cancer Support Services of Berks County.
