Men's soccer fall in overtime to SUNY Cobleskill

READING, PA (September 22, 2012) - Kiernan Boone's late goal sent the Penn State Berks men's soccer team into overtime, but SUNY Cobleskill capitalized on a turnover at midfield to earn a 3-2 victory in Saturday afternoon's North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) contest. (Boxscore)

Justin Bass unleashed a low drive that Boone redirected into the top right corner past the goalkeeper to even the contest at 2-apiece with 65 seconds remaining in regulation. The Nittany Lions made had the ball out front of the Fighting Tigers net in the waning seconds and actually put the ball in the net, but it was just moments after the clock struck zero.

In the overtime period, SUNY Cobleskill wasted no time to pick up its first win of the season. Jonathan Zapata picked up a loose ball around midfield, raced past the Berks defense a drilled a line drive through the right side after just 18 seconds ticked off of the clock.

The teams played an even first half that went to the intermission deadlocked in a scoreless tie. Colin Nystrom put the Fighting Tigers on the board with an unassisted goal of a rebound. But the Nittany Lions fought back and evened the match with some solid play that led to a corner kick. Cory Garritano inserted a pass that Collin McCormick headed toward Derek Dellalba, who then placed the goal into the left corner at the 59:17 mark.

In the 85th minute, Nystrom chipped a shot over the Berks defense and Mike Giuliano headed it in for the lead.

Mack Curran was finished with 10 saves for SUNY Cobleskill, while JOHN MURPHY recorded two.

Both teams caught a break in the first half with shots clanking off of the post. Giuliano had an open look that hit off of the post and Dellalba had a shot bounce off of the crossbar.

The Nittany Lions will continue NEAC play when they host SUNYIT on Sunday, September 22 at 2 p.m.
