Softball blanked by SUNYIT in postseason opener


KEUKA PARK, N.Y. (May 4, 2012) - The Penn State Berks softball team suffered a 3-0 setback to SUNYIT in the 2012 North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) Championship opener on Friday afternoon.

The Wildcats (North No. 2 seed) scored two runs in the third inning and added an insurance run in the fifth. The Nittany Lions (South No. 3 seed) had scoring opportunities, but couldn't translate it into any runners. They left eight runners on base throughout the day.

Stefany Dusman went 1-for-4 with a double, while Marissa Ruggiero and Dayna Harrison were each 1-for-3. Ashley Heeman finished 1-for-2 to collect the Nittany Lions other hit.

LARISSA TENLEY got the start, allowing two runs on three hits in 2 2/3 innings. RAYCHEL DEARMITT was strong in relief, allowing only one run on three hits and striking out seven batters.

The Nittany Lions drop to the consolation bracket where they will face the loser Cazenoiva College (North No. 3 seed) and Penn State Harrisburg (South No. 2 seed). The game will be played on Saturday morning.
