Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Magical season comes to an end for women's soccer

READING, PA (November 4, 2012) - The Penn State Berks women's soccer team fell in the 2012 NEAC Championship to Lancaster Bible, 2-0, on Sunday afternoon. The contest was called in the 89th minute due to a severe injury to a Penn State Berks player, as agreed upon by the coaches and officials. (Boxscore)

After finishing runner-up last season, the Chargers were able to attain their first conference title and earn a trip to the NCAA Tournament. Senior forward Whitney Heise was named the tournament MVP after tallying both goals in the championship and one in the semifinal win over Penn State Harrisburg.

The Nittany Lions created some scoring opportunities, but were unable to finish the play. In the first half, Caitlin Deibler unleashed a line drive from the top of the penalty box. It went over the keeper's outstretched arms, but unfortunately sailed into the crossbar.

Sara Conover dribbled past the Charger defense and around the keeper that came out to challenge her. She then lofted a shot with her left foot toward the back right corner, but defender Anne Hayward stepped in with a defensive save to keep the match at a scoreless tie. In the 78th minute, Melissa Bennett delivered a perfect pass to Conover, who ripped a shot toward the open net that would have tied the contest. But the Chargers received a break as the shot rolled inches wide of the net.

Savannah Cramer played strong in goal, finishing with six saves to keep the Nittany Lions within striking distance. Cramer finishes her magnificent season with the school record for goals against average (0.60), save percentage (.878), and wins (14). She also recorded 72 saves and four solo shutouts and combining on six others.

The defensive play of Ashley Pardoski, Bennett, Emily Rumpf, and Katie Warner played solid against the second seeded Chargers. Deibler, Ellie McKinstry, Chelsea Ray, and Karly Shaffert also put out a strong effort for Berks in the midfield. Meaghan Daly and Steph Tankalavage, who finished second and third on the team in scoring, helped the Nittany Lions create some scoring chances.

The 2012 Nittany Lions set the new standard for the women's program. They matched the school-record for wins in a season (14) and established program records for winning percentage (.806), win streak (11), unbeaten streak (15), goals against (11), goals against average (0.60), shutouts (10), least losses in a season (3). The Nittany Lions also earned the best record in the NEAC 11-0-1 for the first time in program history and reached their first ever conference title game.

Berks also had seven players named to All-Conference teams and we awarded the Rookie of the Year (Conover), Goalkeeper of the Year (Cramer), and Coach of the Year (Adrian Munteanu).
