Women's soccer wins first-ever NEAC regular season title

HARRISBURG, PA (October 27, 2012) - The Penn State Berks women's soccer team defeated Penn State Harrisburg, 2-0, to capture its first-ever North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) regular season championship on Saturday afternoon. (Boxscore)

The Nittany Lions, who will host the NEAC Championship as the No. 1 seed next Saturday and Sunday, wrap up the regular season with an overall record of 13-2-1 and 11-0-1 in the conference. With the win, Berks ran its unbeaten streak up to 14 matches and Savannah Cramer picked up the teams ninth shutout of the season.

Cramer made an amazing diving save early in the second half to keep the Nittany Lions ahead 1-0 at the time. The sophomore keeper finished with five saves and lowered her goals against average to 0.54, which leads the NEAC.

Meaghan Daly provided the offense for the Nittany Lions by using her head. Just 80 seconds into the second half, Sara Conover worked hard down at the goal line to earn a corner kick for Berks. Katie Warner inserted a perfect chip shot that Daly headed over the keeper and several Harrisburg defenders.

Less than four minutes later, Daly tacked on an insurance goal by heading a cross from Ellie McKinstry past the outstretched arms of the keeper. Daly upped her season total in goals to 10, which trails only Conover (19) on the team.

Cramer made another acrobatic diving save with 19 minutes left in the match. As has been the case all season, Cramer was helped by the excellent play of her teammates. Ashley Pardoski, Melissa Bennett, Emily Rumpf, and Warner each played a strong role in stopping the Harrisburg offensive attack. With less than 14 minutes to play, Harrisburg was able to get past Cramer and had what looked to be a guaranteed goal. But Chelsea Ray chased down the ball and booted it out for a corner kick. Caitlin Deibler and Karly Shaffert joined in the effort with shutdown defense in the midfield.

Steph Tankalavage appeared to have a goal in the 83rd minute, but it bounced off the right post.

On Saturday, November 3, the Nittany Lions will play the winner of a quarterfinal contest between No. 4 seed Penn State Abington and No. 5 seed SUNYIT. Lancaster Bible College, the No. 2 seed, will play the winner of a quarterfinal match between Harrisburg (No. 3) and Keuka College (No. 6).
