Shelton paces Lions to season opening win

READING, PA (September 1, 2011) - Amy Shelton had a game-high 14 kills as the Penn State Berks women's volleyball team opened up the 2011 season with a convincing 3-0 win over Immaculata University on Thursday afternoon at Beaver Community Center.

The Nittany Lions won by scores of 25-20, 25-23 and 25-13. In the first game, they used a 10-0 run to pull away from an 11-all tie. Berks trailed 11-4 in the second game, before pulling out the two point come-from-behind-win. The final set saw the Lions take an early lead and keep the foot on the throttle to the final point was earned.

In addition to her abundance of kills, Shelton added one solo block and assisted on three. Maria Pavone notched eight kills, while Kayla Mosser chipped in with seven.

Freshman setter Kaitlyn Schmeck handed out 32 assists and four digs. Victoria Young led the Nittany Lions with 11 digs, followed by Katie Sostak with 10.

The Nittany Lions and their strong home crowd fed off of each others energy all night. The fans consisted of painted chests and non-stop rooting for the blue-and-white after every kill and each suspenseful volley.

The Nittany Lions collected 35 kills in the three games, while committing only 16 errors. In the game three masterpiece, Berks had 14 kills and committed just two errors.

The Nittany Lions will host Albright College on Tuesday, September 6 at 7 p.m. in Beaver Community Center.
