MORRISTOWN, N.J. (April 2, 2011) - The women's tennis team downed the College of St. Elizabeth, 9-0, in the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) and spring season opener on Saturday afternoon.
The Nittany Lions (4-4, 1-0 NEAC) cruised through the doubles matches to jump out to a 3-0 lead. Crystal Hitz and Amanda Fuller earned an 8-0 shutout at the No. 1 doubles flight. Aimee Hoffman and Samantha Warga (No. 2) and the No. 3 team of Liz Martinez and Arion Harris each won by an 8-1 margin.
In the singles play, Fuller had the tightest match of the day at the No. 3 spot. After dropping the first set 6-4 to Yanick Pepe, Fuller bounced back with a 6-3 second set victory and 6-1 in the decisive third set.
Hitz won in the first singles match by scores of 6-3, 6-3. Hoffman (No. 2) was a 6-2, 6-0 winner, while Martinez (No. 4) and Warga (No. 5) each were 6-1, 6-0 winners. Rebecca Loewenstein-Harting had a 6-0, 6-1 triumph at the No. 6 flight.
The Nittany Lions will travel to Penn State Abington for an NEAC match on Tuesday, April 5 at 3:30 p.m.
